How much does Uber/Grab drivers earn hourly?

I decided to write this article after driving Uber for about 6 months on a part time basis to help other Uber/Grab drivers make a decision on joining Uber/Grab. Note I did not drive grab, but I have a buddy that drives Grab (also on a part time basis) that aid me in this write up.

These stats are based on:

  • 164.5 hours on Uber
  • 149.8 Hours driven on Grab
  • 65% Driven on Weekdays after 8pm -12pm
  • 35% driven on weekends 8-12hours
  • Uber was driven mainly in 2016, Grab 2016 & 2017
  • Part time rental (we didn’t rent the car for the whole month)

Quick Stats

  • Uber net payout for 164.5 hours: 4279.85
  • Grab net payout for 149.8 hours: 4618.28
  • Average Uber hourly rates = 26
  • Average Grab hourly rates = 30.8
  • Fuel cost an average of $4.69 per hour
  • Rental cost an average of $7 an hour

With the quick stats out of the way, lets find out how much a uber/grab driver really earns.

Rental Cars

Assumptions:

  1. 190 hours driven a month – Why 190, cos MOM says anything above 44 hours a week is OT, so lets assume we don’t OT here. (44 hours*52 weeks/12 months =190 hours/month)
  2. Car rental is 1680 a month
  3. Fuel per hour = $4.69 – this includes all the discount we can get from spc shell etc.
  4. We didn’t drive a hybrid
  5. Your are driving full time
  6. You pay taxes

Conclusion

It seems like at this point of time driving Grab earns more hourly vs driving Uber. Driving your own car can maximize your earnings as well. I hope this article helps you in some way if you are thinking of driving uber or grab.

*Actual earnings could be higher as we mainly drive  weekday nights and weekends and do not have data of the rush hours. But I highly doubt peak hours could increase hourly earnings by more than $5-10 dollars.
